|Earlier this month, we were honored and excited to partner with Foundation Inc.’s 2016 Beyond School Hours Conference to showcase the importance of high-quality afterschool programming like ASAS. Hundreds of after-school experts gathered in Dallas from across the country to make connections, explore strategies for programming and discuss pressing issues in the “Out of School Time” community.|
Our very own Executive Director, Marissa Castro Mikoy, and ASAS National Program and Volunteer Coordinator Alyssa Plotkin, co-presented a workshop on the success of ASAS’ national “We Are Ready” initiative in ensuring ASAS participants are on track to graduate high school. The presentation highlighted ASAS’ approach to tackling high school dropout prevention by helping middle school students get ready for high school in advance.
ASAS also hosted two of four site tours where conference attendees were able to visit our programs and see students participating in a variety of enrichment classes such as Google coding, DJ music production, STEP dance group and rock band. Marissa explained to visitors how student voice and choice paired with dedicated and engaging program leaders are the two things that contribute to high quality, engaging programs. After the site tours, John Henderson, Executive Director of Communications at Foundations Inc. remarked, "From all accounts, our national attendees were truly impressed with the quality of programming – and the incredible students and staff at the ASAS sites.” ASAS loved hosting these leaders to share how our students shine every day!
